How Does Learning Happen

Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years

At NONI’s Nest Childcare, our curriculum is rooted in How Does Learning Happen? —
Ontario’s official framework for early learning and care. This evidence-based approach
recognizes that children thrive in environments where they are respected, nurtured, and given
opportunities to explore the world around them.

We use this framework to guide every decision we make — from daily routines and classroom
design to how we build relationships with children and families.

The Four Foundations of Learning

We believe that for children to grow into capable, confident learners, four key conditions must be in place. These are the heart of everything we do:

Belonging

Children feel a strong sense of connection to their caregivers, peers, and community. At NONI’s Nest, we build trusting relationships so every child feels safe, valued, and included.

Expression

Children express themselves in many ways — through language, art, movement, and play. We encourage every child to share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas using their unique voice.

Engagement

Children are naturally curious and eager to learn. We provide rich, play-based learning experiences that invite exploration, inquiry, and creativity — both indoors and outdoors.

Well - Being

We support the physical, emotional, and mental wellness of each child. Our nurturing environment helps children develop self-regulation, confidence, and a positive sense of self.

A Framework That Values Families

We recognize that parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. We strive for open, respectful partnerships with families — sharing observations, listening to your insights, and working together to support your child’s learning and development.

A Responsive, Reflective Practice

Our educators are thoughtful, reflective, and responsive to children’s needs and interests. We observe closely, document learning, and adapt our programming to make sure it’s always meaningful, inclusive, and rooted in real experiences.
